There’s Margin in the Office, Too: Introducing Thombar Modules
Thombar Team

Specialty crop growers have spent decades finding margin in the field: better varieties, tighter irrigation, smarter harvest crews. The office has had far less attention. Labor invoices, marketing agreements, leases and freight costs pile up in different places, and the margin hiding in them often goes unseen.
Today we’re launching Thombar Modules: focused tools that each do one piece of back office work for specialty crop growers. Some watch your numbers in the background and flag what changed. Some do a job once, like reading a contract. And you can describe a new one in plain words and have it built. They do the work and bring you the decisions that need you.
Your records in one place, working together
Most farm offices run on disconnected pieces. The labor contractor sends PDFs. The books live in QuickBooks. Leases and contracts sit in a drawer. Market prices come from a website you check when you remember. Each piece is useful on its own, but nothing connects them.
Thombar Modules draw on the same set of your records: your books, harvest records, contractor statements, leases and contracts. A real cost per flat is built from your books and harvest records, not a rule of thumb. Contractor invoices are priced per tray, block by block. Records you connect once are available to every module, so the work doesn’t start from zero each time.
Several modules need nothing from you at all. Trucking, fuel, fertilizer, packaging and USDA price modules run on public data for your region and your crops.
Three kinds of modules
- Watching for you. These run on a schedule (nightly, weekly or monthly), sit at the top of your home screen, and tell you in plain English what changed.
- One-off tasks. These run once when you send them something, then stop. Reading a marketing agreement is the first.
- Build your own. Describe the job your office needs done, and Thombar builds a module for it.
What’s live today
Add any of these and Thombar connects what it needs.

Watching for you
- FLC Invoice Analysis (weekly): reads your contractor invoices and prices your crews per tray, block by block. Needs your FLC statements.
- Cost Per Unit (nightly): a real cost per flat, built from your books and harvest records instead of a rule of thumb.
- Financial Signals (weekly): a plain-English read on your week: cash in, cash out, and what to watch. Needs QuickBooks.
- Commitments (weekly): reads your leases and notes, pulls out what you owe and when, and puts it on a schedule.
- USDA Market Prices (weekly): what your crops are fetching at the shipping point, and which way it’s moving. Nothing needed from you.
- Trucking (weekly): USDA truck rates for fruit and vegetables, with commentary on truck shortages and supply. Uses your address.
- Packaging (monthly): the Producer Price Index for the packaging used in agriculture. Nothing needed from you.
- Diesel and Gasoline Prices (weekly): US EIA prices for your region.
- Fertilizer Prices (monthly): published fertilizer prices for your region, by product, and what moved.
One-off tasks
- Contract Analysis: reads a marketing agreement once and tells you what it actually costs you.
Build your own
- Custom Builder: describe the job in plain words, and Thombar builds the module for it.

New modules are added all the time. See the full current list on our capabilities page.
What it looks like in practice
Labor cost against budget was the problem growers raised most consistently when we talked to them. So one of the first modules we built reads farm labor contractor invoices.
A California grower shared their FLC invoices with Thombar. The module separated overtime into two kinds. Daily overtime made up most of the premium, and no schedule change can avoid it. Weekly overtime could be cut by moving workers between crews, and the module showed which crew had room to take on the work.
None of that required a new spreadsheet or a consultant. The invoices were already coming in. Thombar did the reading.
Build the module your office needs
Every farm office has a question no off-the-shelf tool answers. Is a packer short-paying us? Do our settlement documents reconcile? What happens to our margin if diesel hits $6?

With the Custom Builder, you type the job the way you’d say it to someone in your office, and Thombar builds a module for it. It can draw on the same records as every other module, so you start from your real numbers, not a blank page.
This is the beginning
We’re building new modules all the time, alongside the people who know the farm office best: specialty crop CFOs, growers, office managers and lenders. CFOs help us get the analysis right. Growers and their office teams tell us where the time and money go. Lenders tell us what growers need to show to get financing on good terms.
Each new module starts with a real problem someone brought to us. If there’s a job in your office you wish someone else would do, tell us. It may be the next module we build.
Your data stays yours
Thombar is SOC 2 compliant, encrypts data with AES-256, and does not sell grower data. QuickBooks connects directly, and reports from Famous and DataTech can be uploaded as PDFs.
